So why do most people recommend 1,200 a day for weightloss?

Because they’re idiots

This, this, this, this. Calories are ENERGY, it doesn’t automatically mean you’ll get fat. You need that energy to train your body and get the best results. 
If you’re feeling miserable and you are on your weight loss diet it’s probably because you’re NOT eating enough. So please eat, dammit. The more you do, the more you CAN do.
